In the 17th century, New York was known as New Amsterdam, the capital of New Netherland, governed by Peter Stuyvesant. When the colony passed into English hands, the city was renamed New York in honour of the Duke of York. The city's remarkable history is symbolised by the spiral motif featured in this pendant. Stuyvesant would surely be astonished to see how a small colonial settlement on marshland became one of the world's greatest and most elegant metropolises. His legacy lives on in both a monument and a street bearing his name.
